Change4Life PDF Print E-mail
Written by Steve Freedman

Change4Life is a society-wide movement that aims to prevent people from becoming overweight by encouraging them to eat better and move more.  The Change4Life advertising campaign began on Saturday 3 January – on TV, in the press, on billboards and online. In the initial stage, young families are being targeted. This is an opportunity for pharmacy to be involved. A range of posters and various materials are available from the Department of Health, 0300 123 1002, or check out the website for details.

Sheffield pharmacist and LPC member, with a developing career in broadcasting, Ravi Mohan, will be talking about this on Radio Sheffield on Thursday, January 15th.

Easter Closures PDF Print E-mail
Written by Steve Freedman

Good Friday falls on 10th April with Easter Monday falling on the 13th.  Pharmacies can choose whether they want to open on Easter Monday and Good Friday but it is good practice for pharmacies to notify Sheffield PCT of any intention to open over Bank Holiday periods. This enables NHS Sheffield to plan out-of-hours pharmacy provision during holiday periods.

Contractors should note that Easter Sunday is not a Bank Holiday, and therefore a pharmacy providing core opening hours on Easter Sunday would be required to keep the pharmacy open during all their declared hours. If a pharmacy wishes to change their core hours on this day they should apply to the Contracts Manager, Sue Whitham at Brincliffe for consent to change their contractual hours at least 90 days in advance (i.e.by Friday 9th January).

Sheffield PCT cannot give consent to a ‘100 hour' pharmacy to reduce its core contracted hours below 100 hours, so the Sunday hours that form part of the core contracted 100 hours would need to be distributed to other days of that week, to ensure the total remains not less than 100.If the hours they open on Easter Sunday are all supplementary hours and the pharmacy wants to change these hours for this day, then they should notify Sheffield PCT giving at least 90 days notice. If an application is needed for amendment to core contractual hours, this should be done at least 90 days in advance, and should allow time for appeals if necessary.

Medicines Information Exchange Scheme PDF Print E-mail

This new enhanced service, known as MIES for short, is being commissioned to improve treatment outcomes for certain mental health patients. Initially being piloted for 6 months in the west of Sheffield the MIES scheme requires that the client enter into an agreement whereby any failure to collect their medication will be shared with those involved in their treatment. Under the scheme the client identifies the pharmacy who are to order and dispense the prescription. The pharmacy can then alert the Community Mental Health Team in the event of a non collection.

Under the Service Level Agreement the pharmacy must have robust systems in place which include a suitable SOP. A template SOP can be downloaded here and modified to suit the particular pharmacy.

Chlamydia Screening PDF Print E-mail
Written by Steve Freedman

Sheffield is in the process of launching a pharmacy based chlamydia screening service. There is so much interest in this service that the first training evening held earlier this month is being followed by a second event on the 30th September.

Not all pharmacies participating in the service have toilet facilities for the public. Before the public are allowed access to staff toilet facilities a risk assessment must be carried out to ensure security, safety and confidentiality. Contractors are also reminded to ensure that their public liability insurance includes allowing the public access to these areas. Most policies apply only to those areas that have been included as part of the pharmacy for registration with the Pharmaceutical Society. Contractors needing to extend the registration can do so, without cost, by submitting suitable plans to the society.
